The first worldwide printed Bible in a national language was produced in Germany in 1466 (Mentelin Bible). Only a few years later printed Italian Bibles were published (Malermi 1471). The New Testament of Martin Luther was published in 1522 (Facsimiles). The Bible of Antonio Brucioli was published in 1530 (i.e. even before the publication of the first complete Luther Bible in 1534). It was and is one of the most accurate and best translations worldwide.
The historically most important Italian Bibles (Italian: Bibbia) are: Malermi 1471 (August), Malermi-Ammergau 1471 (1st October), Bibbia Jensoniana 1471 (10th October), Brucioli 1530, Zaccheria da Firenze 1536, Marmochini 1538, Anonimo della Speranza 1545, Rustici 1550 (Bibbia di Ginevra 1562), Teofilo 1551, Crespin 1555, Pasquale 1555, Pineroli 1576, Nannini 1584, Diodati 1607, Ferromontano 1702, Guessnero 1710, Erberg 1711, Freiesleben 1711, Glicchio 1743, Martini 1769-1781.

Italian (Padua?) parchment (dimensions: 325 x 230 mm): In this magnificently illuminated manuscript of the Old Testament, the focus is on the imagery. It is the only illustrated Bible in Italian, and its style and layout are unique among Italian manuscripts, making it one of the British Library's most prized possessions. Located in Veneto to the west of Venice, Padua is one of the oldest cities in Italy and one of its most historically and culturally significant. It was supposedly found ca. 1183 BC by the Trojan prince Antenor, is home to the fifth-oldest surviving university founded in 1222, and became a center of humanism and the Renaissance as it was the site of discoveries of numerous artifacts from antiquity.
Contents: A cycle of 517 miniatures illustrating the Old Testament, from Exodus I:11, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy to the end of the Book of Joshua, with short captions in Italian. Illustrations of the Book of Exodus including full-page images of the founding of the Ark (f.16v), the Menorah or Candeliero (f.17r, see images) and Aaron as a priest (f.17v); f.21r: Frontispiece to the Book of Leviticus: the Tabernacle and Ark with God and angels...

The first printed Italian Bible appeared as early as 1471. Niccolò Malermi (also called Nicholas Malerba, Malherbi, or Manerba) (*1422; † 1481; Wikipedia) was an Italian author of the so-called Malermi Bible (Bibbia di Malermi), the first translation of the Vulgate into Italian. It was the second Bible printed worldwide in a national language after the German Mentelin Bible 1466 (Facsimiles). Because of the great demand, almost 30 editions (1477, 1481, 1490, 1494...) were made. The first of these was published in Venice by Wendelin of Speyer (Vandelino di Spira). In the same place, in 1490, Giovanni Ragazzo and Lucantonio Giunta published a magnificent edition with colored pictures. The famous painter Michelangelo (*1475, †1564; Wikipedia) also owned a Malermi Bible. The Bible was published on August 1, 1471, so it is sometimes called the Bibbia d'agosto (August Bible). However, the October Bible (Bibbia d'ottobre) was printed by Adam of Ambergau (see below).
The first editions did not yet have a title page, and subsequent printings had different designations depending on where they were printed. Examples of editions: Venice, Vandelino da Spira, 1471; subsequently reprinted several times in Venice by Gabriele di Piero, 1477; Antonio Miscomini, 1478; Ottaviano Scoto, 1481; Andrea Paltasichi, 1484; Tommaso Trevisano, 1487; Lucantonio Giunta, 1490, 1492, 1494, 1502, 1507; Guglielmo Anima Mia, 1493; Giorgio Rusconi, 1517; Lazzaro Soardi and Bernardino Benali, 1517; Stefano Nicolini da Sabio, 1524; Elisabetta Rusconi, 1525; Guglielmo Fontaneto and Melchiorre Sossa, 1532; Bernardino Bindoni, 1535, 1541, 1544; Aurelio Pinzi, 1553; Andrea Muschio, 1566; Gerolamo Scoto, 1567.

Adam von Ammergau (Ambergau; born in Ammergau, Upper Bavaria, Germany; Wikipedia) printed a Bible in Venice on October 1, 1471 (Bibbia d'ottobre; October Bible), on the spine of which is written "La Sacra Biblia de Mallermi 1471", but the text differs from the first mentioned Malermi edition and has significantly more errors. The translator is anonymous or unknown. Compared to the original Malermi Bible, this revised text is a deterioration. On October 10, 1471, another Bible was published, sometimes named in the literature Jenson Bible (Bibbia Jensoniana) after Niccolò Jenson, the French printer from Tours based in Venice, but otherwise also known as the Bibbia d'ottobre (October Bible). This Bible had some spelling errors and a cluttered format. For a long time scholars thought that the printer responsible for the October 1471 Italian Bible was Jenson, but it is now agreed that the printer was Adam de Ambergau. This is the reason why no references to copies of the Jenson edition can be found. All Italian Bibles from October 1471 were printed by Adam de Ambergau. Carlo Negroni published the text of the October Bible in a critical edition in 10 volumes in 1887-1892.

Antonio Brucioli (*1498, †1566; Wikipedia) was the first to translate the Bible from the basic languages into Italian. He settled in Venice and produced an Italian New Testament in 1530, an Italian translation of the Psalms the following year and a complete Italian Bible in 1532. Further editions followed, for example, in 1539 and 1541. Brucioli's work was astonishingly accurate. His Bible was a great blessing for all Italian-speaking Christians. But Pope Paul IV (*1476, †1559; Wikipedia) banned the use of all Italian Bibles in 1555 and allowed only the Latin Vulgate. Brucioli was forced to recant and spent the rest of his life isolated under house arrest and in extreme poverty. Numerous Bibles were burned, for example in Florence. Yet his work deserved the greatest recognition and honour, for it is one of the most accurate in the world! Brucioli was a great expert of the ancient languages and (unlike many theologians of today) could clearly distinguish between the individual words in the basic Greek text and did not translate according to church doctrine, so that he spoke of the resurrection of Jesus on a Sabbath morning (see Resurrection Sabbath). This is the teaching that was also in German, Czech Catholic Bibles.

The Dominican monk Zaccheria da Firenze (Zaccaria Fiorentini) produced his New Testament in 1536, which, however, consisted only of a simple correction of the Brucioli text, although Brucioli worked much more precisely...

Santi Marmochini (Marmochino; *ca. 1470; †1548), a Dominican monk and biblical scholar, has revised the Brucioli Bible. His version, however, has some deteriorations because it no longer adheres so closely to the basic Greek text. More precisely, for the OT it is a revision of Brucioli's text and for the NT it is a rendering of Zaccheria's text in which only minor corrections have been made.
The painter Jacopo Robusti (Jacopo Tintoretto, *1518; †1594; Wikipedia) owned a Bible translation by Santi Marmochino. This, like the other Italian Bibles, was banned by the Catholic Church and entered the "Index librorum prohibitorum" (Index of forbidden writings).

Filippo Rustici (Rusticio) further revised the Brucioli Bible in Geneva, moving even further away from the basic Greek text. The same text was reprinted in Geneva in 1560 (Fabio Todesco) and 1596 (Vignoni publishing house). It is clear that Rustici was influenced by the Protestant teachings in Geneva. The 1562 edition in particular is also called the "Bibbia di Ginevra" (Italian Geneva Bible).

Massimo Teofilo Fiorentino (*1509; †1587) was a Benedictine from Florence who had converted to Calvin's new teaching. In 1559 his Bible was placed on the index of forbidden books by Pope Paul IV. (*1476; †1559; Wikipedia). His translation work was free and did not adhere exactly to the basic text.

Jean Crespin (Jean Crispin; Johannes Crispinus; *1520, †1572; Wikipedia) was a French jurist who had to flee from France in 1545 to Geneva after converting to Protestantism. Here he had about 250 books printed in several languages, including the works of John Calvin. In 1558, a bilingual version of the NT in Latin and Italian was also printed (see below: Latino & Volgare NT).
Title 1555: „Del Nuovo Testamento di Jesu Christo nostro Signore.

Luigi Pasquali (Giovanni Luigi Pasquale, Giovan Luigi Paschale, Pascale, *1530; †1560; Wikipedia) was a Waldensian preacher who published the NT in two languages in 1555. On one side was the French Calvin translation printed by Robert Estienne and on the other side the Italian Crespin translation. It was the first Italian Bible to be divided into verses. Pascale was an officer, but his love of the Gospel led him to leave the army and preach the Gospel. As he was committed to spreading the Bible in the national languages, he was captured and taken to Rome in 1560. When he refused to renounce the Reformation, he was sentenced to death at the stake. To give a special touch to the event, his execution was carried out publicly and in the presence of Pope Pius IV. (*1499; †1565; Pope since 1559; Wikipedia). When Pascale even preached the Gospel at the stake, he was quickly strangled and then burned.

In addition to the Brucioli Bible, a bilingual version was also printed in Lyon (by Guillaume Rouillé). The Italian text corresponds to the Bibbia di Jean Crespin of 1555. After Pope Paul IV (*1467; †1559; Inquisitor from 1542, Pope from 1555 to 1559; Wikipedia) again banned the printing of all Bibles in a national language in 1559, Italian Bibles were not printed in Italy for about 200 years. Giovanni Diodati (*1576, †1649; Wikipedia) therefore moved their production to Geneva, Switzerland. His reformed translation appeared in several editions (1607, 1641, 1721, 1744, 1819, 1821, 1991, etc.). Unlike the earlier Italian Bibles, this version is inaccurate in numerous Bible verses.

German: Nachdem Papst Paul IV. Daher verlegte Giovanni Diodati (*1576, †1649; Wikipedia) deren Herstellung ins schweizerische Genf.
Christoph Heinrich Freiesleben (called Ferromontano) revised Dioati's text and had the NT printed in Leipzig by Christiano Gozzio (Goetz). On the title page, Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels (Cristiano Duca di Sassonia; Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels *1682; †1736, Wikipedia) was honored.

It was only after 1755 that the Catholic Church increasingly allowed some Bibles to be produced in various national languages, provided that translators were authorised by the Church. However, this was only done to prevent Christians from reading a Protestant Bible in their own language, as there was no corresponding Catholic one.
Antonio Martini (*1720, †1809, Wikipedia)
published the first official Italian version of the NT in 1771, and in 1778 the complete Catholic Bible. Pope Pius VI (*1717, †1799, Wikipedia), who had been educated by the Jesuits, granted him permission to
print and appointed Martini bishop of Florence. This Bible was inaccurate in many verses and was based on the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Published in 1921, the Bible by the Waldensian Giovanni Luzzi (*1856; †1948; Wikipedia), is based on the Wescott-Hort text, which was revised in 1994 with the title Nuova Riveduta. "The British and Foreign Bible Society
in 1906 appointed a committee to revise the Bible of Giovanni Diodati, headed by Giovanni Luzzi, a Waldensian pastor and theologian. The aims of this edition were:
1. to preserve as much as possible the translation of Diodati;
2. to translate and not to interpret; 3. to use a modern Tuscan Italian.
From 1925 this version of the Bible was put into print. This version is known as the "Riveduta Version" (R), improperly called also the "Riveduta Luzzi", because Giovanni Luzzi was the president of the group of people in charge of the revision" (Source, text translated).
Title: „La Bibbia tradotta dai testi originali e annotata da Giovanni Luzzi“, Vol.1 La Bibbia (sua storia e storia d’Israel); Vol.2: La Legge (Torah) o il Pentateuco; Vol.3-5: I profeti (Nebiim); Vol.6-9: Gli agiografi (Ketubim); X: Apocrifi dell’Antico Testamento; Vol.11-12: Nuovo Testamento, Firenze, Sansoni (poi Fides et amor).
